What are Societies?

A Society is a group of students that come together with a common social, athletic, charitable, cultural, or academic purpose and are ratified by The Board of Directors.

What are the benefits to joining a Society?

Societies are an integral part of enhancing a student’s university experience! Not only do they provide opportunities to meet new people and gain a sense of community, do exciting things, and learn more about yourself, they also give students the chance to expand their university experience, get involved whilst developing new skills, and most importantly have fun!

How do I start a Society with The U?

Want to connect with students with similar interests and don’t see a society for you? Why not start one today! Society Executives must fill out both the Ratification and Constitution Forms (found below in the “Society Forms” Section) at the beginning of every school year in order to be an official Society. Primary Executives (Presidents, Vice Presidents, Lead Coordinators, Lead Directors etc.) must attend Society Leadership Training and must register for a booth at Society Night. Societies are ratified at the beginning of each semester.

How do I join a Society at The U?

The U hosts a society fair at the beginning of each semester that gives students the chance to learn more about societies, meet the current members, and sign up! You can also browse the Society Directory below that has an up-to-date list of Societies including the current Exec Teams!

How The U Supports Societies

The U has a Society Coordinator (su_soc @stfx.ca) who is able to answer all your questions about running and operating a Society including:

Article I - Society Name

The name of the society shall be:

Section III: Be a member of StFX University as a full or part-time student.

Additional Requirements:

*Please note that any additional membership requirements will have to be approved by the Society Review Committee.

Article IV - Executive Names & Duties

Section 1: The elected president will chair all regular meetings, be responsible for the direction of the society and will represent the society to the union. Section 2: The elected vice president will fulfill the regular duties of the officer described in section 1 of this article should it be made necessary and will aid the officer described in section 1 of this article in carrying out duties. Section 3: The elected secretary will be responsible for keeping an updated member list for the society, will take accurate minutes of all regular meetings of the society, and who will carry out all correspondence outside of and within the society. Section 4: The Elected Treasurer will be responsible for maintaining an accurate account of all moves of the society, and will be one of at least two members chosen to have signing authority from the executive of this society for the disbursement of funds.

Article V - Meetings

A meeting can be called by either the elected President and/or Vice President.

Regular meetings shall occur:

*These meeting will be run according to the guidelines set by Robert’s Rules of Order. The quorum fir regular meeting will be 50% of membership.

Article VI - Elections

The officers of this society will be elected between March 1st and March 31st of each year. *Support of at least the majority of the voting membership is required in order for a candidate to win a position.* Nominations for the various positions must be made by any participant of the society and at least 2 weeks before the election.

Article VII - Impeachment

Individual officers of the executive of this society will be considered impeached if 60% of the total membership supports a motion for their impeachment.

Article VIII - Amending the Constitution

Amendment Percentage

Amendment to the constitution of this society must be adopted by the society.
